Webster Technique History & Definition
The Webster Technique is a chiropractic technique developed over 30 years ago by Dr. Larry Webster, DC to address sacral subluxation. The technique involves a specific sacral analysis, diversified adjustment and related soft tissue release to be used on all weight-bearing individuals, including pregnant women throughout pregnancy. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) was founded by Dr. Webster to promote and defend the chiropractic care of children, pregnant women and general family wellness care through patient advocacy, post-graduate education and research. The ICPA is the oldest free-standing organization in the chiropractic profession to teach and certify chiropractors on the Webster Technique.

Due to empirical observations that pregnant women under chiropractic care with breech fetal pregnancies were reporting correction of fetal position to vertex following the use of the Webster Technique, the technique was described in its early days as a “breech turning technique.” However, the ICPA dissociated the descriptive words “breech” and “in-utero constraint” from the technique and simply called it “The Webster Technique.” The reasoning behind this position was that both terms implied the treatment of a condition rather than focusing on the correction of sacral subluxation to restore normal function.

Today, the ICPA defines the Webster Technique as a specific and valuable diversified adjusting technique to be used on all weight-bearing individuals, including the pregnant population throughout pregnancy to reduce pelvic subluxation. The technique has been associated with improved pregnancy outcomes and is utilized to enhance neuro-biomechanics in individuals.
